Intention Matters: A House Clearing, a Developer, and a Lesson in Listening

This project started with a call from a member of the Portland Development Commission. He had recommended me to a developer who was renovating a historic building in downtown Portland, a massive seven-story structure that had served as a newspaper storage facility for over a century. The developer was excited to turn it into a high-tech business center, and he wanted to clear the space before construction began.

I met with the developer and explained that this was a perfect opportunity to not only clear the building's energy but also to infuse it with his intentions for its future success. I felt guided to perform a Tibetan smoke offering to the spirits of the land, and I asked him to bring flowers, black tea, and votive candles for the ceremony.

We arrived at the site early, and the construction workers, who had heard about the clearing, were eager to participate. But when the developer arrived, an hour late and without any offerings, he informed us he had to leave immediately, before the ceremony even began.

The workers, sensing the missed opportunity, stepped up. They went outside, gathered flowers and the other requested offerings, and came together as a group. They voiced their intentions for the building. They all wanted safety, as this was a complex project. They also wished for the work to take longer than scheduled because construction work around town was slow. We then walked through the building, performing the clearing, drumming, and chanting their intentions throughout the seven floors.

Months later, I checked in with the developer. He reported there had been numerous delays, but the most significant thing? There had been no injuries on the site. Their intention for safety had been heard.

This experience was a stark reminder of the power of intention. We can't control everything, but by setting a clear intention and inviting the energy of the universe to support it, we can influence outcomes and create a more positive reality.
