The Hillsboro Man — Dowsing for Water on a Spring Property

When Ed called us he had a problem he couldn't explain. For several weeks water had been bubbling up through the center of his driveway — not from a broken pipe, not from rain runoff, but rising steadily from somewhere beneath the ground itself. It looked, he said, like a small fountain.

He wasn't wrong.

We gathered our team and brought along our dowsing teacher — it had been a while since we had done water witching and this felt like a case that deserved experienced hands. When we pulled into the driveway the source was immediately obvious. Water was pushing up through the asphalt, pooling and spreading across the concrete in a steady green-tinged flow. Something beneath this property had been trying to get out for weeks.

Walking the Land

We began walking the property — observing the soil, the drainage patterns, the way water moved across the land. Then we took out our dowsing rods.

Dowsing rods respond to subtle changes in energy and water flow beneath the surface. In trained hands they are a reliable diagnostic tool — not magic, but sensitivity developed over decades of practice. As we worked our way around the back of the house the rods moved clearly and consistently.

We found not one but three separate sources of water flowing down and beneath the garage — a natural spring on the property, ancient and persistent, completely indifferent to the house built above it.

Mapping the Water

Using an aerial map of the property we marked the three water channels in blue, tracing exactly where the underground flow was moving and where it was collecting beneath the garage foundation.

The note we sent Ed read simply:

Not surprisingly, the flow comes down hill and hangs a left under your garage. There are three strong channels indicated in blue. The best route is probably behind the garage and then down the south side to the street.

The Solution

The fix was practical and straightforward — a substantial french drain across the back of the garage and down the side, directing the water safely out to the street drain rather than letting it continue pushing up through the driveway and foundation. We estimated the water sat between five and nine feet below the surface.

Ed had it installed. The bubbling stopped. The driveway settled. The spring found its path.

What This Story Teaches Us

Underground water is one of the most common and least understood influences on a property. It can cause structural damage, persistent dampness, and — when it creates geopathic stress — can affect the wellbeing of the people living above it.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for a home is simply listen to what the land is already trying to tell you.

If your property has unexplained water issues, persistent dampness, or a sense that something beneath the ground is unsettled — we can help.
